City officials broke ground on the new $70-million mega Lakeside skating center in Prospect Park today. The center was originally set to cost $50 million when it was unveiled in 2007 — and work was set to start in 2009. The project is now slated to be completed by early 2013 and is replacing the Wollman Rink built in 1960. The 26-acre project also includes landscape restoration. City officials today broke ground a $70 million year-round recreational facility for Brooklyn’s Prospect Park that includes two new skating rinks, according to the New York Post.
The 26-acre Lakeside Center project includes open-air and covered rinks to be used for roller and ice-skating, water fountains for kids to play in and new landscaping along the 585-acre park's lake.
The Lakeside Center and skating rink in Prospect Park no longer includes the second story, a publicly accessible rooftop seen in this rendering.
