A promotion for a new NBC television series about a cape-wearing cop turned superhero started turning heads Wednesday when 30 Brooklyn and Manhattan statues were suddenly covered in cloaks, according to the New York Daily News.
City Parks Department officials allowed NBC executives to create hype for "The Cape" by draping frocks on sculptures of historic figures until Sunday in exchange for a $120,000 donation to maintain public art.
"The new NBC series is a novel way to remind even the most jaded New Yorker that heroes are all around us," said Parks Dept. spokeswoman Vickie Karp. She said the funds from the donation will help preserve aging statues around the city.
Black capes shrouded statues of Christopher Columbus near Borough Hall; George Washington at the Brooklyn base of the Williamsburg Bridge; Civil War-era General Henry Fowler in Ft. Greene and former Congressman James Stranahan in Grand Army Plaza, plus another 26 locations in Manhattan.
Nearby kiosks erected by NBC promote the statues and outline their accomplishments, tying them to the show's main character - a valiant cop framed for murder.
The marketing gimmick caught the eye of pedestrians at Borough Hall, but many people found it confusing.
"I'm not sure I see what the connection is with Christopher Columbus," said Peg Horan, 54, a Fort Greene social worker, after she took a cellphone picture of the statue. "It's all become so commercial."
"This sponsorship will benefit the preservation of New York's collection of public art in the parks while drawing new audiences to them," said Vickie Karp, Director of Public Information for New York City Parks & Recreation. "The new NBC series is a novel way to remind even the most jaded New Yorker that heroes are all around us."
