The City Council's oversight hearing examining Public Safety in City Parks has been cancelled.
The hearing - which was to be held jointly between the the Council's Public Safety, and Parks and Recreation committees - was scheduled for Tuesday, November 15th at 250 Broadway.
The City Council's website says the meeting has been "deferred." No other information is available at this time.
Public safety, community members, and park advocates have been pushing for the hearing to highlight the city's severe under reporting of crime in city parks. The hearing was supposed to examine the city's compliance with local Law 114 of 2005 which mandates the tracking and reporting of crime in parks. By 2008 the city was supposed to compile this data for all parks and playgrounds one acre in size and larger which they are not doing.
In April the City Council's Parks and Recreation Committee held an oversight hearing that dramatically highlighted the striking disparity between the number of Park Enforcement Patrol (PEP) officers available in publicly funded parks vs. those available in privately funded "contract" parks including those run by public/private partnerships.
In April city officials said a hearing on reporting crime in city parks would be held in the "coming months."
