Hudson River Park Rape Victim Thanks PEP Officers

Early Saturday morning Parks Officers Daniel Murphy and Luis Cabezas came to the aid of the 21-year-old rape victim and helped catch the assailant.

"If it wasn't for them being right there, I wouldn't have gotten away. I wouldn't have been safe," the victim said.

There were only two officers covering the entire 150 acre park during that time.

CITY COUNCIL Speaker Christine Quinn is calling for the NYPD and parks enforcement officers to be spared from the latest round of budget cuts after two recent rapes in parks, according to the New York Daily News.

"We simply cannot have a city where women and young girls worry ... they will be subject to sexual attack," Quinn said near the scene of Saturday's attack in Hudson River Park, which came 10 days after a birdwatcher was raped in Central Park.

The Bloomberg administration has ordered the NYPD to cut its budget by 2.7% and the Parks Department by 5.4%. But a spokesman said the mayor "will be working with the speaker and council to close the gap while continuing the record progress we've made on public safety."

The victim in the Hudson River Park case was focused on that as well Sunday, suggesting that budget cuts to parks might have eliminated the officers who helped her after the rape.

"If it wasn't for them being right there, I wouldn't have gotten away. I wouldn't have been safe," she said.
