"I always see these dogs off their leashes. It was just a matter of time before they attacked someone, even if it was the owner," said a witness who lives near the park.

The NYPD fired multiple shots at fighting pit bulls this afternoon in a Staten Island Park, the incident left one dog seriously injured. The dog, Baby Girl, was initially reported to be dead.

The newly opened Schmul Park near Wild Ave and Pearson St. was the scene of the shootout that also left a park patron bitten just after 1:oo pm.

An off-leash dog got into a fight with two other dogs, it is unclear at this  moment if the other dogs were leashed.

Law enforcement sources say a female dog owner was bitten by her own unleashed dog during the altercation. She was transported to Richmond University Medical center in stable condition.

It was not  immediately known if the woman was issued a summons in connection with the incident.
