The barrage of bullets were fired in Marcus Garvey Park Playground leaving a 57-year-old male with a gun shot wound to the leg. The man was standing next to a park bench watching a basketball contest when he heard shots being fired. The incident occurred at 9:30 pm.
The shooter, possibly accompanied by an accomplice approached the basketball court from the South East side of the park at E. 120th Street near Madison Avenue and began firing, scattering the terrified crowd.
While exiting the park the victim realized he had been shot. Police believe he was not the intended target.
People recovered at least 10 shell casings - at least three from inside the basketball court and another seven just outside the entrance.
People scattered leaving various items behind including a cell phone and clothing. One person lost in sneaker in the rush to escape the hail of bullets.
The victim was brought to Harlem Hospital where his injury is expected to be non-life threatening.
