No Security At Parks Facility. The Parks Department's privately operated West Bronx Recreational Center was closed today, the day after a 37-year old man was gunned down while playing basketball. According to witnesses, the perpetrator went up Derick Cochran of the Bronx, and shot him in the neck inside the gym as children look on in horror. The incident happened just after 3:00pm on Monday afternoon at 1527 Jessup Ave in the High Bridge section of the Bronx near West 172nd st and Nelson Ave. According to Police, no arrests have been made as of Tuesday afternoon.
Public Safety. This Parks Department Recreation center, run privately by the Highbridge Community Life Center no longer had security according to sources. Unlike Parks Department run facilities which have a City uniformed security presents, ones run by so called public private partnerships are not held to the same standards.

A man was fatally shot inside a recreational center in the Bronx., Police say the shooting happened inside the Bronx Recreational Center on 1527 Jessup Ave in the High Bridge section., Derick Cochran, 37, of the Bronx, was shot once in the neck and taken to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where he died, according to WABC Eyewitness News.
Police say a group of men walked into the center, got into an argument with Cochran, and then someone shot him in the neck.
Cochran was playing basketball at the time.
Several people were taken into custody at the scene and are being questioned by police at this time.
So far, there are no arrests.
Mr. Cochran was reportedly arrested several times including in 1993 for attempted murder.
