A man accused of raping a Russian tourist last month was indicted on Tuesday, a Manhattan prosecutor said in court, according to the New York Times.
The man, Hugues-Denver Akassy, spent about three hours testifying before the grand jury in his own defense, according to his lawyer, but the grand jury voted to indict him. It remains unclear what Mr. Akassy was indicted for or how many victims it involved. But about two weeks ago, the Manhattan district attorney’s office put out a release asking for women who had had contact with Mr. Akassy to come forward. About 10 women came forward, according to a person briefed on the case.
Mr. Akassy, 42, had been charged in a criminal court complaint with raping the Russian tourist, whom prosecutors said he met at the Time Warner Center before going on a date with her in Riverside Park. Mr. Akassy has said that he had consensual sex with the tourist, according to his lawyer, Howard D. Simmons.
