Woman 31, Raped in Tompkins Square Park. 5th Manhattan Park Rape In Recent Weeks

A 31-year-old white female was allegedly raped on Friday night in Tompkins Square Park.
The woman said she had fallen a sleep in the park and was awakened by a man on top of her in the process of raping her police said.
The incident occurred near Avenue B and East Seventh Street at approximately 11:30 p.m.
She fought him off and ran into Kaman Deli on Avenue A.  
The man followed her into the store and  workers called 911.
The police canvassed the area and arrested Ruben Canales, 27, who told police he was homeless.

Police said the matter is still under investigation.
Canales recent arrests include marijuana sales, criminal mischief, and criminal possession of stolen property. 
This is the 5th reported rape in Manhattan parks since September 3rd.

1. On Sept. 3 at 2:15 a.m., a 19-year-old woman was allegedly raped behind a playground in Riverside Park.
2. At 2 a.m. on Sept. 10, a 56-year-old woman was raped and thrown from the second story of Pier 15 on the East River Waterfront near the South Street Seaport. 
3. On Sept. 12, a 73-year-old woman was raped and beaten in Strawberry Fields in Central Park. 
4. On Sept. 22, just after 5 a.m., a 21-year-old was raped , stangled in Hudson River Park.
