NEW YORK (AP) — New York City is moving forward with a plan to ban smoking in parks and beaches.
Officials say Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to announce the legislation on Wednesday.
The city's health commissioner said a year ago that his goal was to ban smoking in city parks and beaches.
Bloomberg has said he was skeptical it could get done. But the staunchly anti-tobacco mayor said in July he was waiting for a final city report on the idea.
The City Council legislation will require hearings before the full 51-member body can vote.
Other states and cities nationwide have banned smoking in parks and beaches.

it would be more beneficial if the same people started banning outsourcing and insourcing of cheap labor from other countries. People are more stressed out from loosing teir jobs than from people smoking. It is so silly. Why don't they just ban the sale of cigarrettes all together. Its because they are going to make a ton of money from all the tickets given to smokers. This is a joke. I can't believe I voted for these officials. It isn't fair that such a miniscule human behavior should be controlled by the government. What will be next? Maybe next is the ban of eating on the streets? There is a nice ban that these officials can make lots of money on. Ha ha ha
